Really looking forward to this series and so happy to have found your newsletter. Please forgive a bit of a self-plug, but this may be of interest to your readers: I wrote a series of pieces last year called “Clapping Back to Misogyny” about several of these writers: there are posts on Christine de Pizan, Austen, Beauvoir, and others.
Love this article. Thank you for writing it. We need more conversations around the topic of the feminist movements over time. No one should take women’s rights for granted.
Excellent! I have to admit to not reading much medieval lit, my studies were more towards 20th century modernist texts, but I love that women writers were always grappling with these ideas 😀
There is a great book Women of Ideas by Dale Sender which covers the writing and activism of about 150 of these feminist pioneers from 17th C through to mid 20th C. Woolf's 3 Guineas is also excellent Looking forward to more on this
Great post! Looking forward to the series. Have you read the book “The Student: A Short History?” Though not about women specifically it does have a section that discusses women gaining access to education that is really interesting.

Haha, thank you, Kate!! Fist 👊 😉
Love this discussion - you know I vote Yay for Austen as Protofeminist! What a great word that I shall have to use in future posts and conversations!
Thank you! I hoped you'd notice that nod to Austen 😉 I think it would be a great discussion point to explore further in her work.
