The copy you show a picture of is the exact version sitting on my shelf. It is the only book by Woolf I have ever read. I will admit that I didn't love it, but I recognize her talent as a writer and also the importance of themes in the story. Woolf and Vita's story is quite an interesting one and I would like to find a biography that dives into it a bit more. Thanks as always Kate for the great review.

Thank you for your honesty, Matthew. I think it's often all too easy to nod along with a review of a 'Classic' rather than admit we didn't love it. I admit that I don't always love Woolf's writing, but like you, I find the themes and cultural relevance fascinating. As for biographies; another Substacker Kelsey at Working On has recommended quite a few books about Woolf and Vita, should you feel so inclined. I also love that you have that edition! It's a fine cover :)

Great newsletter! I've never read 'Orlando' but it sounds like a fascinating look at gender - the perfect read for Pride month. I've heard good things about the film 'Vita and Virginia', too, which looks at the relationship between the two women. Thank you for sharing :)

Thanks! :) I think you would actually enjoy ‘Orlando’, as it has a lot of historical people and events in it, as the backdrop. I agree; ‘Vita and Virginia’ sounds great! :)

What a wonderful essay - perfect long-read for a Sunday. Virginia, and Vita, and their art and their lives and their houses are fascinating and inspiring. I'm going to get a cuppa and re-read this more slowly! Happy Pride month!

Absolutely one of my favourite books! I also love teaching it; the students respond so well to all the rich ideas. Tilda Swinton so wonderful in that film as well. Great article on a great choice 😁

Thanks, Kate! Studying it was fascinating, so teaching it must be! So many ideas contained in it. I actually haven't seen the film- I MUST remedy that! I love Tilda Swinton and can really imagine her being perfect in the role.
