What a wonderful nostalgic trip. Thanks Kate. I’d always thought of WHMS as a mid-90s film, and was surprised when I recently discovered it was ‘89. That and her other films are such a reminder of a fabulous time!

Thank you for bringing this look into Ephron! I am an avid You've Got Mail watcher, and since introducing it to my partner we have made it a Christmas tradition to watch it on the 25th (I know most people feel it's a fall movie, but hey...)!

I love that!! Movies and books have such a significance to points in our lives, don't they? I first watched When Harry Met Sally with my husband when we were first dating, and we watched it again over Easter after many, many years in between! :)

That was an interesting read. I tend to wonder what a couple would talk about today. They'd most likely act in the same sort of ways but the topic of coversations would be a bit different. I assume that they would have to do with what is going on in the world today. I can't say that I've watched those movies in awhile and some of them I have never seen. ALOT of them truly bring back memories though! I think of one everytime I peel an apple, see anything with Rosie O'donnell or Rita Wilson on it. Curious minds want to know if you can guess which one that is? ;) Anyway, wonderful topic.

Thanks for reading, Angela! I think conversation and dating would be very different now! 😀

Ah, I was just thinking of borrowing a Nora Ephron essay collection from my library! I loved Heartburn so much (have not seen the movie yet though). Nora Ephron’s work always reminds me of Laurie Colwin’s, who was basically a contemporary I think. The ‘domestic fiction’ of the 80s was really excellent - I wonder who the current equivalent author is?

Thanks, Kelsey! Ooh, I haven't read Laurie Colwin I don't think...will have to look into that! Yes, I read Heartburn rather than watching it, too. Not sure of who her equivalent would be right now...

I always forget just how many films Ephron worked on! It’s fascinating to read how she started out in the world of writing - I still need to check out some of her work. I think it might be time for a cosy romcom afternoon :) Thanks for sharing!

I know! She was such a powerhouse. You NEED to take an afternoon off and watch all her films!

I love her. Read Heartburn recently and it's so wonderful. Of course, WHMS is one of the last of the great movies.

Thanks for reading, Georgina! I think WHMS is my favourite of her films.

Totally here for all of Nora Ephron, the films, screenplays, essays, and one-liners. Dearly wish she had remained in the world a while longer, but so glad we can tap into the joy she brings through her exploration of words and dialogue and, as you say here, how they can unite or divide us. Thanks for the wonderful discussion!
