Anything by Alison Bechdel! I’d also mention the ones that made it into movies like Blue is the warmest colour (a graphic novel), and Call me by your name. The short story that led to Brokeback Mountain is also unforgettable.

Oh, I love Alison Bechdel!! Thank you for the reminder, Carol. Call Me By Your Name is one I have heard a lot of good things about, so will put that on my list. Brokeback Mountain was sensational. Thank you so much for sharing :)

Shall I bring in something South Asian? I'm currently reading this on and off. It's called Cobalt Blue (originally written in Marathi language but later translated in English). It's about a young gay man who wants to become a writer and falls for the hunk who comes to rent a room at his house. It's very well written, has problematic characters. There is also a film on Netflix with this same name and it's a gem of artwork.

Thank you, Veenita, I love how you introduce us to titles we might not otherwise have come across! It's good to check out stories from other cultures, and I love the name 'Cobalt Blue'. Plus: I'm sold on any book where the protagonist is a writer ;)

My pleasure. It can be a bit heavy book as it can be emotionally draining but I will suggest to give it a go. Also, if you have time, check out the film as well at some point of time. 💛

Alan Hollinghurst is a wonderful writer - I started with The Line Of Beauty when it won the Booker Prize, and loved it so much I've since read pretty much all his books. The Swimming Pool Summer stood out for me too, but if you enjoy literary fiction seek him out.

Thank you, Linda, The Swimming Pool Summer is a book that has been recommended to me a couple of times and is on my TBR list...now would be a great time to put it to the top of the list, I think!! :)

Being an idiot, I got the title slightly wrong - I think it's The Swimming Pool Library (which makes zero sense, frankly!) but as long as you had the writer's name hopefully you'll get the correct book! Enjoy!

Oh I love all of these recommendations ✨ thank you for sharing!! I have always loved Christopher Isherwood’s “A Single Man” and the Tom Ford film of the same name. I should watch that this month!

Great newsletter! I love these choices, I'm hoping to read Tales of the City this Summer (at least the first in the series) and Heartstopper is such a wholesome watch :)

Yes and they're a quick fun read - I read them in my 20s and adored them all.

Tales is such a trip!! Funny, cheeky, subversive- and with a mysterious, Alfred Hitchcock side to it :)

For mystery lovers, I'll recommend Ann Aptaker's Gold series, and if you like mystery with some laughs, Jessie Chandler's Shay O'Hanlon series. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my own Shirley Combs/Dr. Mary Watson series.
