I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the only book of hers I have read and it was quite a few years ago. I think I need to revisit her work at some point.

Matthew, I read that book as an A level student many years ago, and ended up over the next few years buying and reading the other volumes. Such a remarkable life.

The progress of her life parallels the ongoing struggle of Black people in America to gain dignity, respect and equality in all facets of existence.

Absolutely. I was blown away as an A level student when I first read her, and had to find out more about her life and her wisdom. What always amazed me the most was that she had such a huge capacity for compassion and forgiveness.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is an incredible piece of literature, shining a light on the racism of the early 20th century. I need to explore her work further. This is a great look at Angelou's life as a writer and activist. Thank you for sharing :)

Thanks for your post. I read I Know How The Caged Bird Sings in college at least 1000 years ago but haven’t read the other books. I need to pick one up!

Just curious- do you or does anyone know what her birth name was?

No one has a voice of such grandeur and tonality both written and spoken as Ms. Angelou

Thank you so much for thus, I knew so little about this woman it reminds me of the Fawcett statue inscription 'Courage calls to courage everywhere'. She must have been an inspiration to so many.

Stories of her extraordinary life still teach. Will we learn the lessons?

This is the question…it often seems we take a huge leap forward, only to take a giant one back. You are right that we can learn a lot from her life though.
