Amazing write up!! I read parts of Pilgrimage during my doctorate and found Richardson’s writing a bit of a shock--her brand of modernist prose is so uniquely her own, while also being so deeply exemplary of the moment. I am so struck by the connection to Villette. Definitely want to read that scholar’s argument now!
I had never heard of Dorothy Richardson and feel that I should have. We often think of Woolf but how many other unknown writers supported the more ‘famous’ of the time? Great piece of writing.
Thanks! I often think there must be so many writers that didn't really get the recognition they deserved, which makes researching this newsletter so interesting : )
Thanks Kate, fascinating. I'd never heard of Richardson. Interesting she championed keeping the feminine voice at that moment in history, diverging from Woolf. Feels very pertinent to today's debates.
Thanks, Victoria. I hadn't heard of her either until a couple of years ago when I was researching modernist women's voices for a Masters module. I'm glad you enjoyed reading : )
wonderful .
Thank you for reading : )
